In 2016, I had my second son in a home birth on my birthday of all days. It was an exciting and joyous occasion. My son was born healthy and happy and so content in the world. Sadly, ten days later my father passed away and I was drowning in a grief I never knew existed along with post-partum. I was very close to my dad, he was always there for me and we shared being birthday buddy's too as his birthday was in the same month. My sons first adventure was traveling to Michigan with his toddler brother in a car ride for four days from Colorado to Michigan for my dads funeral. After we got back and settled I needed an outlet to process my grief. I had a newborn and a 3-year-old at the time and I decided to start painting. I wanted to create intuitive expressive art, it was my art therapy and it helped me get through one of the most joyous as well as sad times in my life.
Most of the paintings I created started completely intuitively. Paint strokes on a white canvas, layer by layer, and eventually there was a theme. A lot was going on, no lie. I was a stay at home mom to two kids under four years old and trying to start a business with my art. And we were choosing to homeschool the kids so I was going to have them full-time. I would eventually get a little reprieve when my oldest went to his enrichment school. I had no idea what I was doing at times, juggling all of these schedules, taking care of the home and creating new art as I stumbled along the way. It was exhausting, but I had so much fun as I got messy and explored art in new ways with my kiddos. I kept going, fumbling, testing, painting, posting. It was all trial and error and what I learned was that if you keep moving forward you can produce something great, eventually. I was painting and sharing the whole process on social media and it was helping to uplift my heavy heart.
One of my paintings "Reflections," caught the eye of Steve Chandler. Steve's an amazing personal development coach and best-selling author of over 30+ books. The "Godfather" of coaching, they call him. He's worked with people and companies from all over the world.
So, when he asked me if he could use my painting, "Reflections" for the cover of his new book, I was elated. What a super exciting experience to have my artwork adorn one of his masterful creations. I had been a huge fan of his work for many, many years. I'm still so very grateful for the opportunity. It was so exciting to see this colorful raw expression on the this beautiful book cover, designed by Carrie Britto. The creative magic resides within the pages. Lots of Love, ❤️
